"Westwood Baptist Church exists to Exalt Jesus Christ through worship, Equip one another for ministry, and Evangelize the lost with the gospel."
We Exist to...
Exalt Jesus Christ through worship
The Bible has declared Jesus Christ as the Son of God. This is not to mean that He is a son of God, or a child of God, or that He is the son of God in the human sense of father and son. Jesus is the Son of God in that He is “of God”; God manifested in human form. He is the exact representation of God, and the same essence as God. The Son of God is God and is the only One worthy of true worship. True worship is described in the Bible in Romans 12:1-2, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (NKJV) There are three aspects of worship that are pointed out in this passage of scripture that are noted. First, worship is motivated by the "mercies of God". In order to properly worship God, one must recognize that everything that He has given us; grace, mercy, love, forgiveness, eternal life, etc., we do not deserve. Second, true worship is action, we present our "bodies a living sacrifice". This is done by giving everything we are to God; our hearts, minds, hands, thoughts, and lives. Finally, true worship is done through the "renewing of your mind." The renewing of the mind occurs through the continual washing of the Word of God. Therefore, Westwood Baptist Church will strive in everything we do(thought, word and deed) to exalt Jesus Christ as the Son of God through worship.
Equip one another for ministry
God has given specific gifts to the church for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry. These specific gifts are gifts of people according to Ephesians 4:11-13, "And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;" (NKJV) The work of the church is not exclusively done by the church leadership. According to these verses, the work of the ministry is done by the church, until we all come to the maturity of Christ. Therefore, Westwood Baptist Church will diligently work at equipping the church through expository preaching and personal discipleship so the church willgrow to maturity in Christ.
Evangelize the lost with the gospel
The Great Commission of the church of Jesus Christ is given by the Lord Himself in Matthew 28:18-20, "And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (NKJV) Evangelism is not primarily concerned with merely professions of faith; according to the Great Commission we are to teach disciples to "observe" all things that Jesus commands. In other words, evangelism is primarily concerned with making disciples of Jesus Christ. John Cheesman said it well, " To evangelize is to declare on the authority of God what he has done to save sinners, to warn men of their lost condition, to direct them to repent, and to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ." (The Grace of God in the Gospel [Edinburgh: Banner of Truth, 1972], 119). Therefore, Westwood Baptist Church will reach the lost by preaching the gospel of repentance of sin; and faith toward Jesus Christ alone for salvation.
When you visit Westwood, we hope you can say, “Westwood is a place where you can WORSHIP God, GROW in faith and REACH others."
