Hearing and Fearing the Voice of God
Matthew 17:6-7 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.”

Story: What a friend we have in Jesus – both because He is relatable to us and because He is God. In the transfiguration, though, that relatable humanity of Jesus is removed. He stands clothed in a brilliant, almost indescribable whiteness; His face shines like the sun. Peter, James, and John, chosen to witness this, are overwhelmed. Peter tries to say something profound, but he is so terrified by what he sees that he doesn’t make much sense. Then God the Father speaks, and the disciples are terrified at the sound of His voice, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him.” How can these three disciples survive this? Jesus moves near to them and touches them. Even before He speaks His words of comfort and assurance, I like how Jesus comes to them. He’s not standing, commanding, disappointed or frustrated. He draws near in tenderness and understanding.
My Prayer Response: Father, I needed this picture, this truth about Jesus. Sometimes, I view Him as so normal and relatable that I forget how terrifying and awe-ful He truly is. To overcome my tendency to selfishness, I must fear this great Jesus. My friend, yes, but also my Lord. My life is no longer my own – to do as I want – but I belong to this glorious, beloved Son. I need to listen to Him today!
May Jesus draw near to you in your fears!
