My Good Friend, Propitiation!

Propitiation. I once avoided this word. I would hear it in arguments at church – arguments that I wanted to avoid. But God stirred my heart to investigate this term. And now, funny enough, I look at Propitiation as a friend.

God is no longer angry with me. That’s the effect of propitiation. God is no longer angry with you! Not now. Not any time in the future. Not ever! Even in moments when you disobey, when you doubt, when you deliberately pursue sin, God is not angry with you!

A good story on propitiation is found in Numbers 16. In the wilderness, Korah and others challenged God’s choosing of Moses and Aaron to lead Israel. The earth swallowed them up! But the next day, Israel began to complain, saying that the death of Korah and others was entirely the fault of Moses and Aaron. So, God sent a plague that only stopped when Aaron made an offering of incense. Propitiation is a word that describes that; it means to offer a pleasing sacrifice that removes God’s anger and wrath.

For Christians, Jesus is our propitiation. He is the sacrifice that pleases God and removes His anger and wrath. So, because of Jesus Christ, God is no longer angry with you, Christian. And He will never be!

To be clear, wrath is not the same thing as discipline. When God pours out His wrath, it’s punishment. When God disciplines, it’s love. So, even though you may sin as a Christian, God will never respond with anger or wrath. He may respond with discipline, but He will always respond with love. Because Jesus is your propitiation, God will never, ever be angry with you again. You are secure in God’s love for you! And that is exactly why propitiation is my good friend!
