Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus speaks to the crowd:
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
My first thought in reading these words is that I really love the idea of receiving rest from Jesus. Who better? What better rest can be found than what Jesus gives?
Recently, what caught my attention is that Jesus speaks of His heart. This is the only time that He does this, which makes it important. When the Bible mentions heart, it’s not talking about the blood pumping organ in your chest. Rather, it’s the center of who you are. The heart, in other words, is what makes you you. So, gentleness and humility are at the very core of who Jesus is.
Gentle is the idea of being tender or meek. It means that Jesus understands us with our stress and difficulties. Not only does He understand you, He welcomes you into His presence. He loves you.
Humble is the idea of lowly. It means that Jesus is not an ivory tower elite. Instead, He has first hand knowledge of what it is like to be in the low or down moments of life. Jesus is not hard to get too, being on high. No, He is humble, lowly, accessible.
Sometimes we might think that we have too much sin for Jesus. Or too much difficulties. Or our problems are too complex. And while each of these may be true for other people around us, they are not too much for Jesus. He doesn’t invite those who have their lives put together to come to Him. No, it’s those who are weary, exhausted from life. Those who are burdened, discouraged, down.
Most important, Jesus is at all times welcoming to us. No matter what you are experiencing, go to Jesus. He will teach you. He will give you rest.
I pray this greatly encourages your heart. Jesus is there for you; Jesus is with you!
