I was talking with someone on the phone when they abruptly said, “Is that birds I hear chirping in the background?” Surprised, I stopped walking to pause and listen. “Yes, those are birds!”
Do you like background music? The whole purpose is to be present, and yet not noticeable. The birds chirping that day were like background music to me. They were chirping, but I wasn’t paying attention to them – until my friend pointed that out to me.
In our lives, we often miss the background music and sounds that God sends to us. And not just the birds chirping. The feel of the warm sun, or the cold breeze. The growth of plants. The stars in the night sky. We live lives immersed in His creation, all giving the same message of His presence.
Sometimes, we notice His creation – a spectacular sunset; a miserably cold blizzard or rainstorm; a soaring hawk. But to be honest, more often than not, I’m focusing on what I’m doing – and not giving attention to His background music.
Which made me wonder what other elements of God are in the background of my life and I’m not noticing. Well, He’s always present, always with me, because I believe in Jesus Christ. But, am I aware of this? There’s also His love and His grace, constantly available. There’s His mercies, which are new each day and just for that day. There’s also His help, that I can call upon Him at any point of need. I love that even as simple of a prayer as Father, help is immediately heard and answered.
Are you paying attention to His background music? God is always there; He’s always part of your life. But if you’re so focused on yourself, you won’t hear what He’s saying to you. You will miss His messages of love, truth, and help. Make sure you take time to listen to all that God has to say to you today!
