It’s 9:30 at night, and our garage door won’t come down. Yes, I know – first world problems. I’ve tried everything I know, but no success. No progress. I’m reading online articles, my wife is watching videos, but again, no success. We turn to our old standby – calling my father in law. If he can’t fix it, no one can. But with the remote connection, he’s puzzled and unsure. I begin to prepare myself mentally to spend the night in the open garage.
I’m in the house to get the paperwork on the garage door when I hear the noise. That sounds like the garage door. And it was! My wife, with the help of a screwdriver, had fixed the problem.
Which is pretty normal in our house. It’s a bit deflating to my pride, but I’m used to this.
Way back in Genesis, at the very start of creation, God first made the man, Adam. He was created in the image of God and given the responsibility to steward creation.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”Genesis 1:26
Perfect man, perfect creation – it should work out, right? Except God reveals something to Adam and to us; “I will make you a suitable helper.”
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”Genesis 2:18
I’ve been pondering that significant fact for a few weeks. Even perfect man needs help. That’s not a design flaw by God. No matter how much I might grow and improve, I am intended by God to need help. Particularly from my wife, but it also extends to others; I need my family; I need my church; I need my friends. I need God’s help too!
God has given to you a responsibility, just as He has to every person He has made. The primary responsibility is to have a relationship with Him, but there are others like with your family, your job, your home. But in that responsibility, He has also given you help. The responsibility is yours, but you can’t do it alone. Look for and lean on the help God has already given to you. Even a perfect man needs help!
