The Secret Of Being Content

A resolution for 2021 was to make exercising part of my daily routine. Here we are in March, and so far, so good. But today was decidedly not good and very challenging. I wanted to quit. My body felt like it couldn’t go any further. My eyes were ready to shut and my brain was urging sleep. What would you say I should do?

Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Him [that is Jesus Christ] who strengthens me.” Growing up, this verse was like a pre-cursor to memes. It was on posters and inspirational pictures; it was often quoted, especially by athletes. So, did I need the truth of that verse to finish my workout?

Did you know what is said in the verse before? The Apostle Paul talked about a variety of different circumstances: poor and prosperous, full and hungry, having luxuries and not having enough. With all of this variety, Paul says one thing is consistent: I have learned the secret of being content.

So the point of the strength of Christ in believers isn’t so much to finish a workout; or to finish a long day of parenting, or schooling or working. The point is to be content, no matter what is happening. The challenge for me this morning was to be content in Christ.

And I think here is where it gets really interesting and instructive. I often put too much emphasis on my circumstances, and not enough emphasis on salvation. Circumstances change and very frequently. But being saved by believing in Jesus Christ – that does not change. Once you confess your sin and trust that Jesus has paid the penalty for your sin by His death and resurrection, you are forever a child of God. That never, ever changes.

Does that mean we should be passive about our circumstances? By no means. Take action and take responsibility! Do what God has called you and challenged you to do. But always keep in mind that first and foremost is that you belong to God as His child in Christ. Complaining happens when you are focused on your comfort and your situation. Contentment happens when you are focused on your salvation and your walk with Jesus. Let Christ strengthen you to be content in all that happens today!
