I like my life to neat, simple, and comfortable. But that’s not reality. So, what are we to do when life is messy, complicated, and painful? When there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel? We turn our eyes upward to our great and awesome God and we wait. Yes, we wait.
David writes about this waiting experience in Psalm 62. He is currently in the wilderness, because his beloved son, Absalom, is trying to murder him. And lots of David’s friends and advisors have decided to join Absalom. It’s a moment when the bottom seems to fall out of your life. Watch and learn how David waits.
First, David waits silently. In verse 1, he tells himself, “My soul, wait in silence for God only.” He repeats this in verse 5, because he needs to keep that truth before himself. To wait in silence is what it sounds like. We often vent and unpack our troubles to others, but David will speak only to God, and wait in silence.
Second, David waits expectantly. Again in verse 1, David knows that his salvation is from God. In verse 5, his hope is from God. David trusts that God will answer and intervene; God will act decisively and with deliverance.
Third, David waits continually. He advises in verse 8, “Trust in Him at all times, O people. Pour out your heart before Him.” Over and over again, David comes before the Lord; over and over again, He waits, trusting in God.
Finally, David waits in worship. Throughout the Psalm, he sprinkles in descriptions of God – my rock, my salvation, my stronghold, the rock of my strength, my refuge. At the close of the Psalm, David holds onto the power and love of God, “that power belongs to God; and lovingkindness is Yours, O Lord.”
Waiting is hard because it’s humbling. Waiting is good, because you must focus your attention on your God, not on your problems. Know that God is your salvation, your rock. He is powerful and loving. He will always be with His people and act on behalf of His people!
