My family had donuts the other day as a treat. My oldest daughter has her driving permit so we were celebrating. We opened the box and boy did it look good. My mouth started to salivate in anticipation – your might be too as you think about this. But hours after eating my donut, I wasn’t feeling too good. Sometimes, the sugary stuff we crave isn’t the best thing for us.
What if there was something sweet and healthy? Good to taste and good for your health? God’s Word is to be like that for our souls – both sweet and healthy; both enjoyable and helpful.
In verses 97 to 104 of Psalm 119, the Psalmist concentrates on the sweet goodness of God’s Word. He starts with an exclamation of adoration for the Scriptures,
O how I love Your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
Psalm 119:97
Why this love for this old book? Because it gives you great wisdom and understanding for life. Do you want to know what to do? Do you want help in choosing between what is good and what is better? God’s Word gives you God’s wisdom. Read it for wisdom, for insight, for understanding, for good decision making.
Another reason to love God’s Word is guidance. The revealed truth of Scripture makes clear what is right and wrong. So, you can avoid deception, evil, and wickedness, which only lead to harm. You can pursue peace, joy, love, which always lead to improvement.
So with these benefits from God’s Word, it’s no wonder we read the Psalmist say this,
How sweet are Your words to my taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Psalm 119:103
What is something sweet you enjoy eating? How does God’s Word compare with that to you? Do you also crave His Word like that sweetness? Taste and see that God’s Word is good. It is both sweet to your soul, and healthy.
