Fear Journal – Day 151

The LORD is Your Helper!

Hebrews 13:5-6 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?”

Story: David originally wrote those final lines in Psalm 56, when he was captured by the Philistines. But Hebrews 13:6 uses it in a very different context – being free from the love of money. Being content with a little sounds nice, but it’s not so easy to accomplish. There’s always some need, and money seems like it can take care of that need. But Hebrews 13:6 is pointing out that our God is ultimately the One who supplies what we need. And yes, sometimes that is with money. But He has fed many full without the cost of a single cent (manna in the wilderness, Elijah by ravens, Jesus feeding 5,000). The love of money is not the use of money, but the trust that money will solve problems. For us, our trust must be in the Lord, recognizing that in His life, death, and resurrected life, He has already solved our very worst problem – and so will be with us to help us through any and every lesser problem.

My Prayer Response: Father, I love the depth of Your Word, and how one truth can address a whole host of problems and situations. Thank You for the wealth and material blessings in America. Please, teach us to be content with what we have, wisely saving, stewarding to honor You. Point out where we have the love of money, and a trust in it to solve problems. Increase our trust in You, even if that costs us financially. How valuable and precious it is to walk closely with You!

May you confidently say that the Lord is your helper!
