A Lawnmower and Prayer

I was facing a losing battle with my anger late Saturday afternoon. I was trying to start the lawnmower after the long winter layover. I was doing everything I knew how but not getting any success. I could feel my anger rising up within me, ready to boil over and lash out.

I didn’t want to lose this battle with anger, but I was feeling pretty helpless. I had tried to walk away and let me anger calm down. I had tried to reason with myself and remove the anger. But the lawnmower wasn’t starting and my anger kept churning.

Suddenly, this thought conversation came to me:

‘Maybe you should … you know … practice what you’re going to preach tomorrow? Like how it’s important to pray and trust God to intervene on your behalf.’

‘Nah. I need a break thru with this mower, but that’s not really God’s priority.’

‘Oh really?’

A pause and the thought conversation went silent. I tried the mower again. Wouldn’t you know it? First try, and it works.

Prayer is more than just giving God our wish list and waiting for Him to fulfill it. Prayer is walking with God, an ongoing conversation as we travel through this life. Sometimes, we talk to Him about what is disturbing or worrying us. Sometimes, we sit silently, waiting for His direction and provision. And sometimes, God seems to interact with us.

What prompted me to be a Christian was realizing I could have a relationship with God; a mutual interaction. It is so amazing that God invites you to be His child, to walk with Him through life. What a joy and peace to have close fellowship with Him, at any point of time – good or bad, rain or sunshine!
